Jest Profesorem Politechniki \u015al\u0105skiej w Katedrze Podstaw Konstrukcji Maszyn. Magisterium na kierunku Mechanika i Budowa Maszyn uko\u0144czy\u0142 z wyr\u00f3\u017cnieniem na Politechnice \u015al\u0105skiej w 2008 roku. W 2012 roku obroni\u0142 z wyr\u00f3\u017cnieniem prac\u0119 doktorsk\u0105 w dyscyplinie Mechanika, a w 2015 roku uzyska\u0142 stopie\u0144 doktora habilitowanego w dyscyplinie Budowa i Eksploatacja Maszyn w zakresie bada\u0144 nieniszcz\u0105cych materia\u0142\u00f3w na tej\u017ce uczelni. Od 2023 roku jest liderem Zespo\u0142u Badawczego ds. Oceny Integralno\u015bci Element\u00f3w Konstrukcyjnych (Structural Integrity Assessment Research Group<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Do g\u0142\u00f3wnych zainteresowa\u0144 naukowych Prof. Katunina nale\u017c\u0105 zagadnienia zm\u0119czenia i p\u0119kania materia\u0142\u00f3w kompozytowych, w tym efekty cieplne wyst\u0119puj\u0105ce w tych procesach, badania nieniszcz\u0105ce materia\u0142\u00f3w oraz metody identyfikacji uszkodze\u0144, metody analizy sygna\u0142\u00f3w i obraz\u00f3w w zastosowaniu do przetwarzania wynik\u00f3w bada\u0144 nieniszcz\u0105cych, wielofunkcyjne materia\u0142y kompozytowe m.in. do zastosowa\u0144 w statkach powietrznych. Od ponad 15\u00a0lat aktywnie zajmuje si\u0119 popularyzacj\u0105 nauki, g\u0142\u00f3wnie w zakresie geometrii fraktalnej, kt\u00f3r\u0105 r\u00f3wnie\u017c zajmuje si\u0119 naukowo.<\/p>\n

Prof. Andrzej Katunin kierowa\u0142 lub bra\u0142 udzia\u0142 w wielu projektach badawczych finansowanych ze \u015brodk\u00f3w MNiSW, NCN, NCBiR, FNP, NAWA oraz DFG (Niemiecka Wsp\u00f3lnota Badawcza). By\u0142 tak\u017ce jedenastokrotnie nagrodzony przez Rektora Politechniki \u015al\u0105skiej za dzia\u0142alno\u015b\u0107 naukow\u0105, organizacyjn\u0105 i dydaktyczn\u0105. W ramach dzia\u0142alno\u015bci popularyzatorskiej uzyska\u0142 dwukrotnie wyr\u00f3\u017cnienie za artyku\u0142 popularno-naukowy w konkursie \u201eSkomplikowane i proste\u201d organizowanego przez czasopismo Forum Akademickie (2010, 2012), uzyska\u0142 3. miejsce w konkursie popularyzatorskim INTER FNP (2015) oraz zosta\u0142 laureatem konkursu Popularyzator Nauki w kategorii Naukowiec (2018). Obecnie jest cz\u0142onkiem kilku kapitu\u0142 w konkursach popularno-naukowych o zasi\u0119gu lokalnym i krajowym. He actively publishes the results of his research in journals and books, he is the author of over 100 works in periodicals indexed in the WoS database, and six books, including one popular scientific. He is an associate professor at the Silesian University of Technology, Department of Fundamentals of Machinery Design. He graduated with honors from the Silesian University of Technology in 2008 in the field of Mechanics and Machine Design. In 2012, he defended his doctoral dissertation with honors in the discipline of Mechanics, and in 2015 he obtained habilitation in the discipline of Machine Design and Operation in the field of non-destructive testing of materials at the same university. Since 2023 he is leading the Structural Integrity Assessment Research Group<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The main scientific interests of Prof. Katunin include problems of fatigue and fracture of composite materials, including thermal effects occurring in these processes, non-destructive testing of materials and methods of damage identification, methods of signal and image analysis applied to processing the results of non-destructive testing, multi-functional composite materials, e.g. for aircraft applications. For over 15\u00a0years, he has been actively popularizing science, mainly in the field of fractal geometry, which he is also involved in scientifically.<\/p>\n

Prof. Andrzej Katunin managed or participated in many research projects financed by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, National Science Centre, National Centre of Research and Development, Foundation for Polish Science, and German Research Foundation. As part of his scientific and research work, he completed several internships at foreign centers: three short-term internships at TU Dresden (Germany) under the FNP START scholarship and projects implemented in 2009, 2012, and 2013; one-year internship (4 short-term visits) at the University of Porto (Portugal) as part of the FNP Mentoring program in 2013-2014; six-month internship at the University of Lisbon (Portugal) as part of the Bekker Programme financed by the National Agency of Academic Exchange in 2020-2021, a monthly internship at the \u00c9cole Centrale de Nantes (France) as part of the French government scholarship in 2021, a monthly internship at the Technical University of Kosice (Slovakia) under the Slovak government scholarship in 2024, and a monthly internship at the Xi’an Jiaotong University (China) funded from the Excellence Initiative – Research University programme of the Silesian University of Technology in 2025. Prof. Andrzej Katunin has been awarded many times for his scientific and popularizing activities. He obtained, inter alia, FIAT awards for his master thesis (2009) and doctoral thesis (2013), he was twice awarded the START FNP scholarship (2012, 2013), and he was also awarded the Polityka scientific award in the field of technical sciences (2017) and the scholarship of the Minister of Science and Higher Education for outstanding young scientists ( 2018). In 2023 he received a title of Silver Engineer in the plebiscite of the Technical Review magazine, while in 2024 he was decorated by the Bronze Cross of Merit by the President of the Republic of Poland for his scientific activity. He was also awarded eleven times by the Rector of the Silesian University of Technology for his scientific, organizational, and teaching activities. As part of his popularization activities, he was awarded twice for a popular science article in the “Complicated and simple” competition organized by the Forum Akademickie magazine (2010, 2012), he was awarded 3rd place in the FNP INTER popularization competition (2015), and was a laureate of the Popularizer of Science competition in the category Scientist (2018). Currently, he is a member of several jurys in popular science competitions of local and national range. He is a member of the European Society for Composite Materials, the Polish Society of Composite Materials, and the Polish Society of Technical Diagnostics (from 2022 a member of the Management Board) and a member of the editorial boards of the journals Mechanics of Composite Materials, Shock and Vibration, Journal of Composites Sciences, Diagnostyka, Journal of KONBiN.<\/p>\n
