Nicole Dołowy-Rybińska

Dr hab. Nicole Dołowy-Rybińska, prof. IS PAN - cultural scientist and sociolinguist, works at the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Since 2019, she has been the Deputy Director for Scientific Affairs there. She studied cultural studies at the University of Warsaw and intercultural communication at INALCO in Paris. In 2010, at the Institute of Polish Culture of the University of Warsaw, she defended her doctorate on the situation of minority languages and cultures in Europe (supervisor: Prof. Andrzej Mencwel).

She is a laureate of scholarships and grants that enabled her to conduct research in Poland and abroad: UNESCO / Keizo Obuchi 2006; Foundation for Polish Science (START 2011 program; research internship at the Mercator Institute for Media, Languages and Cultures, Aberystwyth, Great Britain; Monografie program, 2016); National Science Center ("Sonata" grant 2011-2014, "Opus" grant 2017-2020); Minister of Science and Higher Education for young scientists (2012-2015); The Sorbian Institute in Germany (research internships 2010, 2015, 2016); NPRH (grant for English translation of books); Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage (SMiLE 2018-2019). Participates in research projects as part of the cooperation between the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Italian Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (2014-2016; 2020-2022). She is a member of the Committee Management COST Action 19102 “Language In The Human-Machine Era” (LITHME) (2020-2024).

Her main interests include the issues of the identity of European linguistic minorities, methods of protection and revitalization of minority languages and cultures, linguistic activism, multilingualism and multiculturalism, analysis of discourses related to the threat of languages and saving vanishing cultures. He conducts field research in Kashubia (Poland), Lusatia (Germany), Brittany (France) and Wales (Great Britain). He is also interested in the history and situation of national, ethnic and linguistic minorities in Poland. She is a member of several scientific societies and the author of five monographs and several dozen scientific articles.
