Uzyskał stopień doktora nauk medycznych w Zakładzie Biochemii Uniwersytetu Medycznego w Łodzi, na którym obecnie zajmuje pozycję profesora. Celem jego badań jest scharakteryzowanie nowych mechanizmów molekularnych, które mogą stać się celem dla leków o działaniu przeciwzapalnym, przeciwbólowym i przeciwbiegunkowym. Do jego głównych zainteresowań należy patofizjologia nieswoistych chorób zapalnych jelit (NZJ) oraz zespołu jelita drażliwego (IBS). Poza tym Prof. Maciej Sałaga zajmuje się rolą regulacji aktywności białek G w przewodzie pokarmowym. Interesują go przede wszystkim białka z rodziny RGS i ich wpływ na endogenne układy receptorowe (kanabinoidowy, opioidowy i serotoninowy). Jego warsztat badawczy obejmuje przede wszystkim zwierzęce modele NZJ, bólu trzewnego, biegunki, choroby wrzodowej żołądka oraz cukrzycy typu 2. Prof Maciej Sałaga jest współautorem 80 artykułów w międzynarodowych czasopismach. Indeks H = 28, całkowita liczba cytowań 1417. Był również mówcą na licznych konferencjach takich jak, European Opioid Conference 2013, Guildford, UK, VIIth Joint Meeting on Medicinal Chemistry 2013 Lublin, Polska and United European Gastroenterology Week 2016, Wiedeń, Austria.

W latach 2018-2020 był członkiem Young Talent Group w Europejskiej Unii Gastroenterologicznej.

He obtained his PhD in medical sciences from the Medical University of Lodz, where he currently holds a professorship. The aim of his research is to characterize new molecular mechanisms that may become targets for anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antidiarrheal drugs. His main interests include the pathophysiology of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Additionally, Professor Maciej Sałaga studies the role of G protein regulation in the gastrointestinal tract. He is primarily interested in proteins from the RGS family and their impact on endogenous receptor systems (cannabinoid, opioid, and serotonin). His research primarily encompasses animal models of IBD, visceral pain, diarrhea, peptic ulcer disease, and type 2 diabetes. Professor Maciej Sałaga has co-authored 80 articles in international journals. H-index = 28, total number of citations 1417. He was also a speaker at numerous conferences such as European Opioid Conference 2013, Guildford, UK, VIIth Joint Meeting on Medicinal Chemistry 2013 Lublin, Poland and United European Gastroenterology Week 2016, Vienna, Austria.
